Whether you a fan of the Big Mac or not for those of us who see McDonalds as an occasional treat with the kids a member of FreeFromGluten Facebook Group let us know that McDonalds has gluten-free items on its menu in Italy as the picture above shows.
In her words: “Hi both me and my son who’s 12 are gluten intolerant, we went on holiday to Italy for new year, finding something to eat for dinner was really hard for my son ( I’m not to bad I like salads but he doesn’t ) well we found mac Donald’s, we haven’t had one for over 2 years, my son thought he would never get one again, but when we saw this my son was very happy lol, for me I was glad to get back home to a proper meal ? but was good for holiday treat xx”
“They taste almost the same as normal ones, we found 2 places in Italy that did them but not in France, we are from the uk, my son was over the moon, they should bring it here it’s just a question to when!!”
Apparently this isn’t just in Italy members also reported that McDonalds in Spain and Portugal also have gluten-free items on the menu where they are called “sin-gluten.”
Another group member reported from Sweden: “They also have it in Sweden. This weekend we were out traveling across Scandinavia and I must say I was very happy to be able to have a burger after quite some time ? the bun tastes like sand tho, so if you’re up for trying one, make sure you have something to drink ?”
For those of you living in Australia McDonalds is trialling gluten-free items in its Singleton Store – New South Wales, according to a member down-under: “This is the store that is used for trials before anything new is rolled out.”
In Ireland: “McDonald’s fries and curly fries are gluten free also they give you the burger without the bun and its lovely I’m a coeliac and I’m fine with it ?”
In the UK a member reported: “I’m in the uk and in our local McDonalds I can take a GF roll and they will toast it and put the burger in!! They say they there is always a chance of cross contamination but never had a problem” However this would appear to be a localised arrangement so its always worth asking in your local McDonalds.
French fries in the UK should be ok as: “They made sure my chips came from a fryer that nothing else other than fries is cooked in and said the only thing they do cook with the chips in the end fryer was the veg burgers and they are gluten free.”
For those of you living in the USA/Canada it looks like there are no gluten-free items and they cannot guarantee the fries as they do not use separate fryers. But a member said:”I order chicken without the bun since the bun isn’t available in the US. ? it’s ok in a lettuce wrap.”
Have we missed anywhere let us know in the comments if McDonalds in your country has dedicated gluten-free items on its menu.
Now you know that there are some countries with gluten-free menus there should be absolutely no reason why a global corporation like McDonalds cannot introduce it everywhere.
An idea that was suggested to bring pressure on McDonalds was to post on their Facebook Page asking about when they will introduce gluten-free items on their menu in your country. This is the link to McDonalds main Facebook page lets see what a bit of pressure can do!
